The North Dakota SOAR program focuses on individuals who are homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness. The SOAR process can also be used to serve anyone in North Dakota who is eligible to apply for Social Security Disability benefits through Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and/or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
SOAR works by having trained SOAR Case Managers do a lot of the hard work in creating a successful SSI/SSDI application, including: interviewing the applicant, gathering and submitting all relevant medical records, writing and submitting a medical summary report. This both speeds up the process and leads to a greater likelihood that the applicant will be approved in the first application.
See the video below for a comparison between the traditional SSI/SSDI application process and SOAR.
MHAND staff have been trained to provide assistance in applying for SSI and/or SSDI to individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and who have mental health challenges.
